Legislative Bulletin

Several legislative bills I advocated for that support working-class families and communities were signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom. The following are a few legislative victories:

AB 1261:  Immigrant Rights Act

  • The goal of this law is to provide pathways for undocumented crime victims and witnesses to seek justice and feel safe coming forward without risking deportation.

SB 567:  Homelessness Prevention Act

  • The law aims to ensure that there are no wrongful evictions that can lead to families losing their home by addressing loopholes and unforeseen flaws in the Tenants Protection Act’s cause provisions.

AB 28:  Gun Violence Prevention, Healing, and Recovery Act

  • This law aims to generate about $160 million annually to support crucial violence prevention programs that will improve school safety programs and protect our communities by imposing a 11% excise tax on firearms and ammunition.

AB 600 - Criminal Procedure:  Equity in Resentencing Act

  • This law will allow the court to recall or reduce the sentence length of a defendant's term and remedy discriminative practices in the criminal justice system.

In addition to these four bills, Governor Newsom signed into law SB 616, which will guarantee workers at least five paid sick days per year. This will help mitigate workers having to make the difficult decision of going to work sick and having the ability to make ends meet.
